Praying Psalm 91

Every day, when my mom drove us to school, she would always pray Psalm 91 as part of her prayer over us. From her, I learned to pray this way and I also learned what I should pray about daily.

When Krystina and I were growing up, our parents taught us to memorize Scripture and to also pray Scripture over our lives.  When you want to learn how to pray, learn from studying the Word of God.

This morning I was thinking about one particular passage my mom prayed over us every single day.

Every day, when my mom drove us to school, she would always pray Psalm 91 as part of her prayer over us.  From her, I learned to pray this way and I also learned what I should pray about daily.

Psalm 91 reminds us daily of God's protection upon our lives and families.  And in the dangerous world that we live in, I believe it's more important than ever that we pray for God's protection upon our families and that we also thank God in faith for His protection.

God is our refuge and fortress.  He will save us from traps laid by the enemy and from deadly pestilence.  His faithfulness is our shield and in Him we find protection.  When we walk with God, there is no reason to walk in fear.  We might be tempted to fear, but we should do as the New Testament instructs us to do, casting all of our cares, anxieties, and worries upon the Lord.  Harm may happen around us but it will not come near us!  No harm will befall us; no disaster will come near our homes.  Verse 9 reminds us though that this is true "If you make the Most High your dwelling."  This reminds me of John's Gospel where Jesus encouraged us to remain (or abide) in Him and in the Father.  God's angels guard us so we will not even strike our feet against a stone.  God tells us He will rescue us, and verse 14 reminds us this is true because we love the Lord.  God will answer us.  He will be with us.  He will deliver us.  And with long life will He satisfy us and show us His salvation.

Personalize this Psalm.  Pray it over your family every day.  And then thank God for His protection and safekeeping around your life and your family.

Psalm 91 (NIV 84)
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—even the Lord, who is my refuge—
10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
